Albert Slark's Bio

Award-winning artist Albert Slark grew up in Calgary, Alberta Canada. He developed a passion for drawing and painting at an early age. In 1990 he graduated from the Alberta University of the Arts, majoring in visual Communications. Post-graduate studies include classical drawing and painting with Michael John Angel 1992. He also studied privately with realist painters in New York, Steven Assael, Max Ginsburg, Dominick Finelle and Dorian Vallejo. He attended several workshops at the Art Students League N.Y. and still continues to do so.

From 1994- present Albert has illustrated book covers from Action Adventure, to Romance for publishers across North America most famous for his romance and western covers he has illustrated well over 500 book covers to date. 

In 2003 One of three Canadians to be commissioned by the USPS, Albert has painted six commemorative stamps (portraits of celebrities) the most famous being that of Marian Anderson, Spencer Tracy, Betty Davis and the 2011 release of Barbara Jordan. From corporate portraits to family portraits  and private commissions.

August 2016 article American Art Collector Magazine Pages 58-61, 2014 Article on “How I paint a portrait” published by International artist magazine. 2013 American Art Collector magazine. The Toronto Sun, Toronto Star and the National Post. TV appearances, CBC, City TV and was proud to be interviewed by Sandy Rinaldo as part of a CTV Canadian success story. Most recently on Star Portraits Se 2, (A reality TV show) Albert painted the portrait of celebrity Mike Holmes. The painting is now in Mr. Holmes private collection. 

Awards: Albert’s portrait of Dr. Alan Hudson awarded Certificate of Achievement 2018 (PSC} Ms. Carmen Whalen won “Best Portrait Award” of 2015 from the Portrait Society of Canada, as well as a certificate of merit in 2013 for the portrait of Ms. Elora Bates. In 2011 for his portrait of Mr. Ernest Fisher. The painting of Marian Anderson won an honorable mention awarded by the Art Directors Club of Washington. In March 2015-Feburary 2016 the portrait of Marian Anderson exhibited at the Smithsonian's National Postal Museum  Washington DC. and was also exhibited at the Society of Illustrators 48th Annual Exhibition in New York city. Over the years Albert has exhibited in many galleries accross Toronto, in 2015 a group show at Joseph Carrier Gallery Toronto.

Albert also taught concept art for games and animation depts.. at Durham College UOIT and currently teaches classical drawing and painting  at his own Atelier. Hobbies include painting from life as often as he can. Loves to read about art and painting techniques, philosophy and comparative religion, good fiction also plays drums in a rock band "Chronicles a tribute to RUSH"
